Bansuri, or bamboo flute, is a traditional instrument that has been adapted in this century, mostly by Pannalal Ghosh, to accommodate the nuances of classical music. The traditional bansuri has six holes. These days some have seven holes, the seventh hole giving more versatility in playing certain ornaments. These flutes are made to be in tune in one key, which is the note produced when the top three holes are closed.
Our flutes are made by Jeff Whittier, a master craftsman who has been a student of flute master G.S. Sachdev since 1971. Jeff chooses long jointed, thin walled bamboo from India and Hawaii. His flutes are played by Sachdev and Hariprasad Chaurasia, and are praised by musicians everywhere for their sweet tone and tunefulness.
